Teemoja Syksylle 2008

Tämä blogin päivittäminen on jäänyt muiden kiireiden varjoon, mutta nyt päätin ryhdistäytyä näin OpenMind , Suomen epäilemättä johtavan, avoimen lähdekoodin tapahtuman aattona.
OpenMindissa kuulee varmaan taas mielenkiintoisia uutisia, siitä missä Suomen avoimen lähdekoodin maailmassa mennään, eikä vähiten sen takia, että jo yhdettätoista kertaa järjestetyn ohjelmistoyrityskartoitus OSKARIn tuloksia kerrotaan avoimen lähdekoodin osalta Linkki . Mielenkiintoista on kuulla miten Suomi asemoituu USAn ja Euroopan rinnalle mitä Larry Augustin on viimeaikoina kommentoinut.
Seuraavien viikkojen aikana tulen myös haastattelemaan pariakin kotimaista ja kansainvälistä avoimen lähdekoodin yrittäjää jotka ovat onnistuneet saamaan rahoituspaketteja kasaan, joka tuntuu olevan vielä kovin haasteellista ainakin Suomen oloissa.
Kiina on ehkä relevantimpi kuin koskaan avoimen lähdekoodin kasvupaikkana ja lokukuussa menenkin käymään Pekingin OSCampissä , josta lisää voi lukea vaikkapa Peter Chengin blogista

1. Kerro hieman taustoistasi
Olen työskennellyt ICT-toimialalla yli 20 vuotta eri tehtävissä, viimeiset vuodet ennen Proactumin ja sen projektinhallintaan ja konsultointiin keskittyneen emoyritys Prioriten perustamista mm. ICT-allalla toimivan pörssiyrityksen (TJG) ja sen tytäryritys Key Partnersin toimitusjohtajana, Fortumin kehitys- ja tietohallintojohtajana sekä TietoEnatorin tytäryrityksen verkkopankkialueeseen keskittyneen liiketoiminnan vetäjänä. Toimialalle olen aikoinaan tullut ohjelmointitehtäviin, joten ohjelmistokehitys ja ohjelmistoprojektien hallinta on minulle tuttu kauttaaltaan.
2. Lyhyesti Proactumista
Proactum on terhakka, nopeasti ja hallitusti kasvava ohjelmistoalan palveluyritys. Olemme erikoistuneet maailman johtaviin avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmistotuotteisiin ja niiden toimituksiin liittyviin palveluihin. Keihäänkärkialueitamme ovat dokumentinhallinta, sisällönhallinta (ECM) ja asianhallinnan ja tuotteet Alfresco™ ja portaalialueella Liferay®.
Olemme kehittäneet myös avoimen lähdekoodin Proactum Platform-palvelualustan, johon olemme integroineet Alfrescon ja Liferayn lisäksi mm. Asterisk-VoIP-puhelinvaihderatkaisun ja sitä myötä kehittäneet merkittäviä innovatiivisia ratkaisuja suurille call center -asiakkaillemme yhdistämällä Liferay-portaalin ja Asterisk-Voip -vaihderatkaisun usean toimiston call center -kokonaisuudeksi.
Suoraselkäinen asiakasyhteistyö on toimintamme kivijalka ja korkean tason teknisen osaamisen lisäksi asiakkaamme saavat meistä todella palvelualttiin kumppanin. Asiakkaan agenda on meille ykkönen. Meille ovat tärkeitä myös arvomme, joita ovat Palvelu, joka tarkoittaa sydämestä lähtevää halua tarjota parasta palvelua. Luotettavuus, joka tarkoittaa, että pidämme lupaamistamme asioista kiinni. Asenne, joka tarkoittaa ryhdikkäitä toimintatapoja, rohkeutta, innostuneisuutta ja joustavuutta.
3. Keskeiset Virstanpylväät tähän mennessä?
Jo ensimmäisenä toimintapäivänään Proactum allekirjoitti ensimmäisen toimitussopimuksensa suuren suomalaisen tukku- ja vähittäiskaupan kanssa. Sen jälkeen aktiivinen asiakaskontaktointi, ahkera osallistuminen tarjouskilpailuihin sekä laadukkaat tarjoukset johtivat siihen, että Proactum sai ensimmäiset puitesopimuksensa julkishallinnon toimijoihin. Yritys on toiminut taloudellisesti kannattavasti ensimmäisestä päivästään alkaen ja sille on myönnetty tunnuslukujensa ansioista mm. Suomen Asiakastiedon Suomen Vahvimmat Sertifikaatti, jonka saa alle 10 %:a yrityksistä.
Proactum pääsi siis jo alkumetreillä nopeasti kiinni projektitoimituksiin ja hoiti ne erittäin hyvin. Lisäksi saimme vahvaa projektinhallintaa vaativia toimeksiantoja ja mm. S-ryhmään kuuluvan S-Pankin kokonaistestauksen koordinointi oli vastuullamme.
Alkuvuodesta 2008 Proactum osti avoimeen lähdekoodin teknologiayrityksen Quosis Oy:n liiketoiminnan. Liiketoimintakaupan ansiosta Proactum sai erittäin laaja-alaista avoimen lähdekoodin teknologiaosaamista, joka yhdistettynä Proactum Oy:n vahvaan projektinhallinnan ja liikkeenjohdon osaamiseen sekä erinomaisiin asiakassuhteisiin takaa onnistuneet ja asiakkaiden toiveiden mukaisesti läpiviedyt projektit.
Yhdistymisen jälkeen meidät on valittu toimittamaan Liferay- ja Alfresco-ratkaisuja erityisesti julkishallinnolle eli toimitamme mm. YTV:n Liikenneportaalin ja HKL:n mittavan julkaisujärjestelmätoteutuksen.
4. Miten ja miksi Proactumista tuli avoimen lähdekoodin yritys?
Ajatus siirtyä perinteisestä ohjelmistoliiketoiminnasta avoimen lähdekoodin palveluliiketoimintaan syntyi oikeastaan vähitellen. Ensin seurasin viestejä maailmalta kuinka yhä enemmän ja enemmän alettiin puhua avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmistoista ja siihen liittyvistä liiketoimintamalleista. Pian havaitsisinkin, että avoimen lähdekoodin ratkaisut kilpailevat tasapäisesti kaupallisten ratkaisujen kanssa laadullisesti muutenkin kuin käyttöjärjestelmätasolla. Myös Gartnerin tutkimukset olivat jo pitkään antaneet sen suuntaisia viestejä, että tähän suuntaan ollaan väistämättä menossa. Asiakkaat haluavat rahoilleen vastinetta eivätkä enää ole valmiita maksamaan pelkistä lisensseistä summia, joilla saisivat avoimen lähdekoodin tuotteita hyödyntäen rakennettua koko palvelun. Lisäksi OS-tuotteiden edistyksellisyys on se syy, joka saa yhä useamman asiakkaan valitsemaan tuotteet siltä saralta.
Siinä vaiheessa kun myös suomalaisilta asiakkailtamme alkoi tulla alustavia kyselyä avoimen lähdekoodin ohjelmistoista, oli aika kypsä toimintaan. Tällöin aloin aktiivisesti etsiä sopivaa osaamista ja hyvin nopeasti löysin Quosiksen. Heillä oli jo merkittäviä referenssejä ja he olivat valinneet juuri ne tuotteet, joille markkinoilla tuntui olevan kysyntä. Ja mikä tärkeintä, heillä oli juuri se oikea asenne, jota potentiaalisia partnereita etsiessäni pidin tärkeimpänä.
Tehtyämme muutaman yhteisen projektin syntyi päätös yhdistymisestä hyvin nopeasti. Synergiaedut olivat heti huomattavat ja se näkyi käytännössä nopeasti edellä mainittujen julkisten tarjouskilpailujen voittoina. Suomen oloissa ainutlaatuisen korkeatasoinen teknologiaosaaminen valituilla teknologioilla yhdistettynä Proactumin kymmenien vuosien projektinjohdolliseen ja hallinnolliseen osaamiseen ja oikeaan asenteeseen luo meille Proactumissa sellaisen kasvualustan avoimen lähdekoodin palveluliiketoiminnalle, että vastaavaa saa hakea. Tyytyväisyydellä olemme todenneet, että valittu tiemme on oikea ja sitä etenemme jatkossakin määrätietoisesti pyrkien erottumaan toimitustemme laadulla sekä asenteella.
5. Mitkä on tavoitteesi Proactumille 5 vuoden sisään?
Näemme Proactumin viiden vuoden päästä globaalisti merkittävänä avoimen lähdekoodin teknologioiden ja tuotteiden taitavana yhdistäjänä ja palveluntuottajana. Yhdistämisellä tarkoitamme tässä yhteydessä Proactum Platformiin liitettyjä tuotteita ja teknologioita. Kantava ajatuksemme Proactum Platformille on, että maailman johtavat avoimen lähdekoodin komponentit saadaan toimimaan saumattomasti yhteen ja asiakkaille voidaan toteuttaa nykyistä parempia ja kustannustehokkaampia kokonaisratkaisuja.
6. Avoin lähdekoodi ja Suomen Julkinen sektori
Uskon, että tehokkuusvaateiden lisääntyessä ja kustannustehokkuuden vaatimusten kasvaessa avoimen lähdekoodin ratkaisut tulevat näyttelemään merkittävää osaa myös julkishallinnon tuottavuuden kohottajana. Avoin lähdekoodi mahdollistaa sen, että yksi palvelukokonaisuus kehitetään kerran ja hyödynnetään kaikissa julkishallinnon organisaatioissa samoilla kehitysresursseilla.
Tässä olemme ottaneet merkittäviä askeleita mm. tekemällä Alferscoon Suomen Kansallisarkiston SÄHKE-määrittelyn vaatimusten mukaiset toiminnallisuudet. Tällaisen yhteisöllisen kehitystavan edut ovat hyvin selkeät ja kuten niin useasti käytetty vertaus osuvasti ilmaisee ”Miksi pyörä keksiä useasti uudestaan, kun kerran keksityllä kaikki voivat ajaa”

MySQL Tour visits Open Tuesday in Helsinki May 6th
This winter we haven’t had as many Open Tuesday meetings as we had last year, but we will finish off the season with meeting Sun and MySQL on May 6th at 18:00, in the usual place Club Ahjo, Bulevardi 4, Helsinki.
In celebration of Sun acquiring MySQL AB, Sun is organising a worldwide MySQL Meetup Mashup Tour. The Helsinki meetup is part of the traditional Open Tuesday meetings and is the last stop on this tour. Helsinki is where the first lines of MySQL code got written and we will meet and talk with co-founder Mikael “Monty” Widenius and other long time MySQL’rs about the journey that led up to the biggest Open Source acquisition in history ($1bn).
Come to Club Ahjo on the first Tuesday in May to meet with MySQL and Sun. Sun is sponsoring the open bar and rumor has it there might also be some t-shirts or other swag for those who arrive early.

Tuxin gospeli löydetty

Yhdellä Kiinan matkalla tapasin paikallisen avoimen lähdekoodin yrittäjän, joka antoi minulle kirjan ‘’The Source Code of My World'’. Kirjassa on monta kiintoisaa kirjoitusta, mutta myös tarina ‘’Gospel of Tux Unearthed'’ mikä kertoo kuinka tulevaisuudessa löydetään kirjoitus ohjelmistoteollisuuden ja avoimen lähdekoodin synnystä:
‘’Every generation has a mythology. Every millenium has a doomsday cult. Every legend gets the distortion knob wound up until the speaker melts. Archeologists at the University of Helsinki today uncovered what could be the earliest known writings from the Cult of Tux, a fanatical religious sect that flourished during the early Silicon Age, around the dawn of the third millenium AD…'’

Interview with Peter Cheng, CEO of TargetSource

1. How did you get started?
After 7 years effort on open source community and 3 years business practice on open source services in China, we think it is a right time for us to start up TargetSource. More and more companies always ask us to help them to solve problems when they use open source, sometime if you are just a individual, it is not a long term strategy for company to get support on open source software. That’s why we started TargetSouce, an open source service company which delivers to end customers by a global collaboration network with partners base on the open source software.
2. What is your product?
TargetSource strategy is not building a single open source component or product such as JBoss, hibernate, Spring or so. From our point view, our customer requirement is a solution, which can help them solve their technology problem and optimize their business. So, TargetSource has developed the Enterprise-Ready Open Source™ Platform to enable these powerful new open source-based solutions. For each solution, TargetSource selects the right components, and then integrates, builds, tests and packages them to create stacks that are optimized for that solution.
3. Key milestones?
In the next coming 5 years , there will be three key milestones for TargetSource
1) 2008, startup year for core team building, spread enterprise-ready open source strategy to China, and enable more business and technology partner to use enterprise-ready open source software. At the same time , establish the partnership with open source companies such as Redhat, SUN Microsystem, SpringSource, MuleSource, IONA and so forth. Begin to build a good open source ecosystem in China.
2) 2011, with 3 years growth, TargetSource will growth fast and establish his capacity and position on open source services market in China, It will enter into a faster growth period.
3) 2013, TargetSource will become the NO.1 open source service company in China, whenever an company wants to use open source software , he should call TargetSource for help.
4. Why did you decide on the open source model?
Open source is already beyond the source code, it’s about process, the way on how to build good software; it’s about community, the way to let more people to share their ideas together; it’s about methodlogy, the way on how we think about software. Out vision is to build good software and let more enterprise to use it with the right way without lock into commercial software,give people the freedom to use software. Open Source is the right choice to make all this happen.
5. How do you see TargetSource in 5 years?
As I have metioned in the key milestones , TargetSource will growth fast in the next coming 5 years, we will provide more opportunity for smarter people who work on open source , we will hire those people from the community also contribute on open source in the community. TargetSource will be a community driven company, the one important think for us to do is to enable more open source community in China, right now , it’s important to breed community soil in China, then you will gain in the next coming 5 years. TargetSource will become an very important company of China software industry also be an important role in the open source world.
6. Some comments on Open Source and China
After running more than 7 years open source community in China, there are really so many things I can talk about open source in China, but the first thing I want to say that open source in China is just at the early age, there is still need to learn more about the open source community management methodology, how to adopt open source software into your software, how to share and exchange ideas between different kinds of community. The second is about education, if we want to make open source success in China also around the world, we need to let more student to learn and participate the open source, if you know it, maybe you will use, then you will participate.
That’s why I started the Open Source University program to give lectures around 100 universities in China.
Language is culture , If you want to do business well in China, the first thing is to learn Chinese, find the best local people with international experience and ability to collaboration with you. Finally, I think Open Source will be the best way to make China software industry become stronger.

Joining Continuent Advisory Board (updated March 3rd)

Earlier this week at OSBC in San Francisco a new advisory board was announced for Continuent, the leading provider of commercial open source middleware solutions for database high-availability and scalability. I feel priviledged to be able to be part of this group:
Tim Golden, Senior Vice-President, Bank of America. Tim has 20 years IT management experience designing and implementing major infrastructure projects, both as a consultant working for IBM® and currently as a senior vice president at Bank of America working exclusively with Linux® and open source software technologies. He was also named as one of the 15 most influential open source business people recently by eweek story here
Douglas S. Tracy, the EVP for IT (North America) and Chief Technology Officer, Global IT, Rolls-Royce. Doug has over 25 years of management experience in the private and public sector. In this role, he is responsible for supporting the IT needs of 8,000 employees in Rolls-Royce North America, a $4B subsidiary of Rolls-Royce plc. In addition, he is responsible globally for defining the medium and long range IT strategies for Rolls-Royce plc, a $15B and 40,000 employee organization that develops power solutions and services. As CTO, Doug determines the technical architecture upon which the IT environment of the future will converge and authorizes new investments in information technology solutions.
Barry Klawans. Barry was founder and CTO at Jaspersoft™ and responsible for the technical vision and direction. He has over 20 years of experience architecting and developing enterprise applications. Prior to JasperSoft, Barry was the Systems Architect at Bidcom, one of the original engineers at Remedy, and an early engineer at Sybase®, where he spent five years of development effort on the core server and network access layer.
Zak Greant, Electronic Frontier Strategist. Zak owns and operates Foo Associates, a strategic consultancy that helps companies adapt to and thrive on the Internet. Their clients include eZ Systems AS and the Mozilla® Foundation. Zak is an active participant in many free and open source communities, offering advice to groups like the Free Software Foundation and the Open Source Initiative.
Mikko Puhakka, Consultant and Researcher. Mikko is an open source consultant and a researcher at Helsinki University of Technology. He founded Holtron Ventures in 1999 and was an early investor in MySQL®. He is a founder of Open Tuesday in Finland.
Stephen Walli, Consultant. Stephen was vice president of R&D and founder at Softway Systems before being acquired by Microsoft®. Currently he consults on software business strategy.
