The open source future is not about Linux anymore. The open, transparent collaboration impacts widely in the software industry with some 140,000 projects around. Further, we are seeing the methodology initiated by Linus Torvalds while a student at University of Helsinki over 15 years ago been extended to open content, open hardware etc.
As of 2007 it is easy to claim that all the major IT and IT related companies are doing something around the open approach, while not necessarily having a set corporate strategy.
This blog observes and comments on various open source developments in Finland and globally, attempting to keep people interested in the Open Future up to speed.
The writer Mikko Puhakka has a long history in high-tech business dating back to early nineties, with the first exposure to Open Source in 2001, when he was involved in making a seed venture capital investment to MySQL, that has since grown to be world’s most popular open source database.
Currently Mikko is working as a researcher at Helsinki University of Technology SoberIT Laboratory , is an advisor to COSS (Center for Open Source Solutions Finland) , and is a founder and chairman of Open Tuesday , a networking forum started in Finland in early 2006, but now with activities covering Beijing, Johannesburg and Zaragoza. Further he consults select clients on Open Source strategies.
